Local MP Alan Mak leads successful community campaign to keep Hayling tip open with County Councillor Lance Quantrill

Local MP Alan Mak has welcomed news that Hayling tip is to be saved after spearheading a community campaign against its closure, working with County Councillor Lance Quantrill.

Hayling was among 12 out of 24 household waste and recycling centres that Hampshire County Council had proposed to shut to save £1.6m.

But now members of the County Council's Cabinet have voted to save Hayling tip and keep its existing opening times.

Just eight per cent of more than 10,500 respondents to the county council's consultation had supported the overall proposal to close Hayling and 11 other tips across the county.

Mr Mak said: "I'm delighted that Hampshire County Council has listened to our arguments in favour of keep Hayling tip open. County Councillor Lance Quantrill and I have worked hard on this issue since spring and we are grateful for Islanders’ support.

"There has been strong public feeling on this issue because closing Hayling tip would have meant Islanders having to drive all the way to the Havant tip instead.

"This would not only have been inconvenient and cost more money in petrol, but damaging to the environment by adding to traffic and carbon emissions."

He added: "I also think that having a local tip reduces the likelihood of fly-tipping, which I know people are concerned about."

This is the second time that Hayling tip has been saved thanks to Mr Mak's intervention. The county council had originally proposed closing it back in 2016 and he also led the fight to keep it open then.

Thousands of residents signed a petition and Mr Mak lobbied decision-makers at county council HQ in Winchester.
