Local MP Alan Mak has launched a new advice guide aimed at residents facing isolation or mental health challenges during Coronavirus ahead of World Mental Health Day.

Alan’s free online Mental Health Guide has been supported Queen Alexandra Hospital, the Portsmouth and East Hampshire Samaritans and mental health charity Mind, giving some tips to residents on how to improve their wellbeing.

That includes advice for over 55s who might be living alone or have been shielding during the lockdown in recent months and might do so again in future.

Alan launched the guide as statistics show 1 in 4 people experience mental health problems and many of us know a family member, colleague or friend who has struggled with their mental health.

World Mental Health Day takes place on Saturday 10 October 2020 and the theme for this year is ‘mental health for all’. The Government will also release its State of the Nation report to coincide with World Mental Health Day.

Alan said: “Throughout the Coronavirus pandemic it is vital that we maintain our mental health as much as our physical health. I know that it has been difficult for some, especially those living alone or who have been shielding.

“That’s why I’m delighted to launched this guide alongside Queen Alexandra Hospital, Samaritans and Havant Mind. If you are having mental health difficulties or want to find out how to keep your mind active please read the guide on my website.

“If you are experiencing a crisis or are feeling down, please don’t be afraid to seek advice from a medical professional or ring a specialist organisation such as Samaritans or Havant Mind.”

The Guide is being supported by Havant and East Hants Mind, who deliver free and open access crisis services in Havant for both adults and children aged 11 and over. That includes the Adult Safe Haven, which is open 365 days a year 6pm-10pm - offering both face to face and telephone support and the Havant children and young people's Safe Haven for 11-17 year olds. Visit www.easthantsmind.org for more information.

Maria Morrell, Deputy CEO of Havant Mind said: “No one should have to face a mental health problem alone. As we mark World Mental Health Day, please read Alan’s guide and if you need help we’ll listen, give you support and advice, and fight your corner.”
