Alan Mak MP: Working Hard for All Havant's Residents

I'm proud to serve all the residents of the Havant constituency as your local MP. I bring real-life experience and a proven track record of success to my work in Parliament and across the constituency serving our local communities.

I joined the Conservative Party to ensure my values and priorities – personal freedom & responsibility, strong families & communities, hard work, opportunity for all, and patriotism – were translated into action on the ground and policies in government. These are the values I bring to my work as your local MP across Havant.

Britain: Hope, Freedom and Opportunity

My faith in Britain’s promise was shaped early on by my parents who fled Communism and dictatorship. They were told that in Britain, if you work hard and play by the rules you can get ahead in life. And that’s what they did. It is an example I follow in my own life.

My parents opened a small shop on a Yorkshire high street which they would run for over 20 years. Arriving in Britain with just a few pounds and the hope of a better life, they used the freedom and opportunity they found here to build a more secure and prosperous life for themselves and their children. They built a small business, bought their own home, started a family, and saw their children go to university and build successful careers. They were thankful that my sister and I were both born in Britain, and would have opportunities they never did.

I cherish British values because my family know first-hand how tough life is without them, and how precious our freedoms are. Britain kept its promise to my parents and their generation. I joined the Conservative Party - and became our local MP - to ensure the hope, freedom and opportunities they enjoyed are available to everyone.

Living the British Dream: From Shop Floor to Boardroom

I’m not a career politician - but through hard work I have built a successful business & professional career combined with a track record of service to charities and good causes.

From Margaret Thatcher’s support for small businesses to her Assisted Places Scheme which gave bright children from poor backgrounds like me the chance of a better education, Conservative policies and British values have transformed my life. They helped me get from classroom to the boardroom - and from the shop floor to the boardroom, and now to the floor of the House of Commons where I serve all the residents of Havant.

Conservative Majority: Building Britain’s Opportunity Society

I'm delighted that we have a majority Conservative government, and one which puts building the Opportunity Society at the heart of its agenda. Whilst Theresa May's government is building on David Cameron's work of repairing our economy, building the "Opportunity Society" is our Party’s most pressing long-term task.

For me, the Opportunity Society has two dimensions: first, a society where community spirit and pride are renewed, so individuals take greater personal responsibility for themselves, their families and their neighbours; and secondly, and most importantly, a society where social mobility flourishes, so that people can go as far and as fast in life as their talents will take them. Greater social mobility and community spirit are crucial to building the stronger communities, patriotic country and economically competitive nation we all want to see.

That’s why I got involved in politics, and why I am proud to be your MP: to help build our Opportunity Society for everyone across Havant and our country.
