Thank you for contacting me about the reported termination by landlord Southern Co-Operative of the lease currently held by the landlord of the Hayling Billy pub in Gable Head, Hayling Island.
I have been working with Councillor Andy Lenaghan, one of Hayling Island's elected representatives on Havant Borough Council (HBC) to obtain further information from Southern Co-Operative about their plans.
Our understanding is that the Southern Co-operative acquired the Hayling Billy pub around two years ago from Enterprise Inns (a pub operating company) which was proposing to close the Hayling Billy pub at that time. The Southern Co-operative then allowed the Hayling Billy pub landlord to continue trading at a discretionary and discounted rent.
We understand that the Southern Co-operative now have plans to redevelop the Hayling Billy pub site and therefore the pub will be closing in the new year, although trading will be able to continue over the Christmas period.
Councillor Lenaghan has contacted Southern Co-operative to ask them about what they plan to do with the Hayling Billy pub site. However, no further information has been forthcoming at this stage.
I suspect that details of Southern Co-operative's plans for the site will only become publicly known when they submit a formal planning application to Havant Borough Council. When that happens, Councillor Lenaghan and his colleagues will certainly make representations to HBC as they see fit about the future use of the Hayling Billy pub site.
In the meantime, if you or any other residents, have thoughts, opinions or concerns about the future use of the Hayling Billy pub site, I recommend that you pass them on to Richard Stileman, Head of Property for Southern Cooperative by email Mhayling@southerncoops.co.uk or leave them for his attention at their Hayling store on Elm Grove.
Ultimately, Southern Co-operative are the owners of the Hayling Billy pub site which remains private property, and I as your Member of Parliament have no powers to prevent Southern Co-operative redeveloping their site and closing the Hayling Billy pub. However, I will be happy to pass on ideas, thoughts and and concerns to Havant Borough Council, the planning authority that covers Hayling Island, if a formal planning application is submitted by Southern Co-operative. Residents should also make representations to HBC when, and if, a formal planning application is made as I understand Havant Borough Council wish to see existing Community Facilities and Shops protected.
On a separate but related point, Southern Co-Operative have confirmed that this redevelopment does not involve the closure of their current supermarket site in Elm Grove.
